Chase

Chase ATMs have what I consider a "fatal flaw". Their machines ingest your card during the transaction, which is OK in my opinion for a number of reasons. But when the transaction is finished, there's a serious lag between the ejection of the card and an audible noise informing the user that the card has been ejected. I've almost been locked out of a late night bank lobby after walking away from the machine only to hear the beep almost too late.

A simple fix would be to have the beeping start the moment you press the final button. It boggles my mind that this has never changed.

Good point. I lost my card late night that way. I walked out of the door that requires and ATM card for entry and couldn't get back in since my ATM card was still inside.

On the Upshot, I did benefit from the universality ATMs. At an ATM in Germany I discovered I could get by without the phrase book, since the UI was basically the same. I mentioned this to a co-worker. He said he had the same experience in Japan. It does however raise an interesting design issue. Colors do not provide the same symbolism across cultures on one hand. On the other, a universally consist UI, even on not designed for your culture, could be helpful when dealing with something like money.

I have almost left my card in an ATM twice. Once was on a busy corner, where I walked away and because of the delay and the traffic, I didn't hear the beeping.

In some countries where English isn't the local language, if you put in a foreign ATM/credit card, the interface switches to English.

I haven't even noticed any color other than blue on the ATM machines. It could be useful, using a different color for a different account. Red = Savings, Green = Checking, ect.

I agree too that the designs are slightly flawed. I think the alternate design that has been created for ATM machines involving the swipe action instead of the insert action are a much better design. By having the swipe action in place, users don't have to worry about the machine eating their card or the chance of them leaving it there if they are in a rush and the person behind is given a nice present. I have had my card "swallowed" by a drive up ATM because I got distracted and I did not pull the card out in time. The other issue with the design that I think you mentioned is that the delay is too long for the card return. However, the probelm I find is that the receipt will usually spit out sooner than the card does and I will pull the receipt and then sometimes take the time to look at it and while I examining how much money I don't have, the card is there waiting for me to take.

Unfortunately the "swipe" ATMs are more susceptible to hacking. It's common in some parts of the world to hack a sensor into the swipe mechanism, something that sits on top of the actual one, that reads your card info when you swipe over it. You would have to physically crack a Chase ATM open to do something similar.

Also, I'm lazy and don't get the receipts. But if I did I imagine the wait for the card to eject wouldn't seem so bad. In my opinion the machine should beep to warn you about a receipt or an ejecting card though.

YOu got a point, I have stepped up to a couple of ATMs that have the card still stuck in them and of course with no one around...

I guess they are assuming that folks wouldnt leave without their card. It is one of the main sources of retrieving their cash...
Personally I have never left it, and i found it weird that folks would leave it behind.
how about a little message that pops up while your taking out your cash that states: DONT FORGET YOUR CARD.
And one more time when you finished all of your transactions.
Would that help?
Besides, a beep wouldnt help the hearing impaired wouldnt you agree? Both visual and sounds would work better.

I've been to a couple ATM's that beep to remind you of the card and reciept but even in those cases, the only reason it was audible is because I turned my car stereo all the way down... with the way everything beeps these days, from cars to coffee makers, it's kind of easy to miss it. I don't even really know why the card still necesary but I'd imagine (and hope) that soon it'll be a thing of the past.

My mind often boggles and chase has been the cause of many a boggle. The also will not issue you a debt/atm/whatever card in a state different then the one in which you originally set up your account. They will however transfer all your funds from that other account into the exact same type of account and then issue you an atm card...Makes no damn sense, believe it has to do with federal laws of somesort.

If you do get locked out you can use nearly anything with a magnetic strip to get back in, creditcard, hell a upass might work. Doesnt have to be chase, cause they want those $3 fees from other bank users

True, a visual and audible clue would help. I only mention the beep because it's already being used but ineffectively. The screen could flash in tune with the beep just to grab your attention.

I'd say the card is still necessary, simply so there's two factor authentication. It's nice to know someone can't simply intercept an email with your username and password and get into an ATM.
